A bold move has been made in the NHL as Tyler Myers, the veteran defenseman, has been traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Dallas Stars. This trade, which took place on a Wednesday in March 2026, has sparked some interesting discussions among fans and analysts alike.
Myers, a 36-year-old with a wealth of experience, was acquired by the Stars in exchange for draft picks in the upcoming 2027 and 2029 NHL Drafts. With eight points and an impressive average ice time of 20:13 per game this season, Myers brings a solid presence to the Stars' defense.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Canucks, currently last in the NHL, have retained 50% of Myers' salary, which was already a fairly low cap hit. This move, according to Canucks GM Patrik Allvin, was a strategic one, allowing them to acquire more draft picks and continue their rebuild.
Dallas, on the other hand, is riding a franchise-record 10-game winning streak and sits second in the Central Division. Stars GM Jim Nill believes Myers' addition will bring flexibility to their blue line.
"Tyler is a veteran presence who will enhance our group immediately," Nill said. "His ability to play on the right side gives us an added dimension."
And this is the part most people miss... Myers had a no-movement clause in his contract, which limited the Canucks' options for trading him. Despite this, Allvin managed to secure a good destination for Myers and a solid return for the Canucks.
With a career spanning 17 seasons in the NHL, Myers has accumulated an impressive 403 points, including 100 goals and 303 assists. He even won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie during the 2009-10 season with the Buffalo Sabres.
Canucks coach Adam Foote had nothing but praise for Myers, calling him "a great leader and a true professional." Foote added, "'Mysy' will be missed for sure. He handled himself with professionalism throughout this process."
With the NHL Trade Deadline approaching on Friday at 3 p.m. ET, the league is buzzing with excitement and anticipation.
Allvin, when asked about his expectations, said, "I want to see more fight and urgency from the group. It's about preparing every night for the fans and playing with pride."
